Why does my dog bark?
Dogs don't bark for no reason: they bark to express themselves. But what exactly does your best friend want to express? It can be anything. These are the most common reasons for barking:
- Greeting. Does your dog come running, barking and wagging its tail? Then it just wants to greet you.
- Insecurity or fear. Does your dog feel insecure or anxious? This can also manifest as barking. The owner can amplify this feeling. Are you noticeably tense when you encounter another dog while walking? Then your dog picks up on this feeling, which makes the animal bark even more.
- Protecting its territory. Against people, but also against other dogs or animals.
- Warning. Your dog sees or hears things and wants to warn you about them. This works well against burglars, but it's annoying if your dog sees almost everything and everyone as a threat.
- A reaction to another dog. This is also called social or reactive barking. Your dog barks because it hears another dog barking.
- Frustration. For example, because your dog doesn't get enough exercise or is bored.
- Attention. When your dog barks, you automatically give the animal attention. Your dog quickly figures this out. The result? Every time your dog wants a pat on the head, it barks.

Finally, your dog may also bark because it is in pain. Does your dog bark a lot? Then we advise you to take the animal to the vet. There may be a medical cause for this.

Tips to stop barking
If you know why your dog barks, it's easier to stop the barking. Because if your dog barks to get attention, for example? Then it can already help to simply ignore the animal when it barks. Whatever the reason for the barking, there is always a way to stop it. We are happy to give you some tips to curb the barking.

tips to stop your dog from barking

Limit visibility
Does your dog bark to protect its territory and/or to warn you of possible danger? Then limit its visibility to stop the barking. By limiting visibility, your dog can no longer see someone entering its territory. Or that there is something or someone to warn its owner about.

Does your dog bark a lot by the window? Then close the curtains or blinds. Does your dog bark a lot by the fence? Then it can probably see through it. It reacts to the things it sees outside the fence. The solution? Cover the open parts of the fence, for example, with dense shrubs.

Create a safe zone
Does your dog bark out of insecurity or fear? Then it can help to set up a safe zone. This is a zone where your friend feels comfortable and secure. This will reduce feelings of insecurity and fear, and peace will return to the home.

You can set up a safe zone with a crate or dog bed, dog toys, and a speaker. You can play white noise or soft music on it.

Training
You can also train your dog to bark less. There are several suitable methods for this. Does your dog often bark in specific places in and around the house, such as the front door or the back door? Then the recall command can offer a solution. You use this command to make your dog come to you. This makes your dog leave the place where it is barking, and the barking stops. The commands 'quiet', 'sit', 'down', and 'stay' can also help.

You can also teach your dog to bark on command. If you teach your dog to bark on command, it won't bark at other times. It may sound strange, but it is very effective!

Go outside more often
Does your dog bark out of boredom? Then go outside more often. Most people take their dog for a walk two or three times a day. For some animals, this is sufficient. Other dogs crave more exercise. You may notice this, among other things, by excessive barking.

Take a long walk with your dog, in the forest, through the dunes, or on the beach. And if the weather is nice? Then it's wonderful to go swimming. This way, your dog not only gets the necessary cooling but can also expend its energy.

buy an anti-bark collar

Buy an anti-bark collar
You can also curb barking with an anti-bark collar. An anti-bark collar reacts when your dog barks. By distracting your dog, it will naturally learn to stop barking.

The traditional bark collar gives your dog an electric shock when it barks. This is not exactly animal-friendly: the electric shocks hurt. Many people therefore do not want to purchase this type of bark collar, no matter how annoying the barking is. Since 2023, these bark collars have also been banned in the Netherlands.

JC Pets has the solution: an animal-friendly bark collar. This bark collar is equipped with a highly sensitive sensor that effortlessly picks up the sound vibrations of every bark. Does your dog bark twice in a row? Then the bark collar produces a corrective beep. After three barks, the vibration mode is activated. This mode stops your dog from barking without hurting the animal. This way, you keep your loyal four-legged friend healthy, while being rid of the barking.

Onze pup shih tzu is 5 mnd en blaft in de ochtend als wij van bed afgaan, ze blijft blaffen en janken. We hebben alles geprobeerd, foei, negeren. Wat kunnen we hier aan doen.
